Bierstadt Study by HoustonSharp Bierstadt Study by HoustonSharp
Finally finished with this one! I've been working on this for about a week straight, and i'm glad to finally put it up.

A study of one of Albert Bierstadt's paintings. Check out his work if you aren't familiar with him. His work is incredible.

This was a really fun study to do and took a lot of work, but I'm glad to be done with it. Hope you guys like it!

Don't forget to join me on facebook! I show a lot of sketches and WIPs on there, and talk about a bunch of nerdy stuff: [link]

Thanks for looking!

Oh wow, this is beautiful. I love those clouds and how they kind of just mist into the mountains beyond, and I also love the little waterfall and the reflection on the water. Simply gorgeous.

So detailed. It really captures the style of Bierstadt. It even looks smoother than his work to be honest, haha.

Based on this [link], right? I love both pieces; yours here and the original. This same photo by Bierstadt I saw a framed image of it inside one of my old college's counseling offices and I was amazed by it. I think I was staring at it for a few moments and people passing by must've thought what a peculiar site I was ^^; Anyhow, fantastic work on this!

Oh, wow - this is beautiful!

You should see some of my Bierstadt studies... blurry and muddy and god knows what's happening in them, haha.

Random question: do you eye-drop your colors, or just work/pick them 'til they match the photo?

haha thanks! I usually color pick before I start to generate a basic palette, and then work around with them until the color relationships match.

I like it because it's not empty. Some landscapes only use lovely and well-matched colors to create their emotion, but this is complete, detailed in every part of it, not only where you want the spectator to look. It's wonderful...like some Turner in his first period.
Maybe that place does not really exists, but yet I want to go there :)

Some really nice work man. I found his work about a week ago and am thinking of doing mattepainting studies from them. Should be fun.

I Googled the artist and was very impressed. You managed to retain the essence of Bierstadt's pieces. I do believe you caught sight of the key components. The point of view, with a low horizon, the use of animals and wildlife to give the piece dimension, and finally, the water detail. I'm pretty impressed by the use of light as well.
A week straight? You can definitely see the effort but I don't sense a struggle.

Thanks! Yeah i worked hard on keeping it similar, but I would up keeping it a bit looser in the end. That foreground was going to kill me if I painted it as tightly as Bierstadt did. I have major respect for that man.
